Etymology is the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history (Oxford English Dictionary)
This assignment will ask you to create your own words related to the subject of biology in order to learn the roots, prefixes, and suffixes common to scientific terms. Knowing the origin and meaning of various roots, prefixes, and suffixes is useful for biology students because it helps you understand unfamiliar scientific words that you may come across. You will be creating a dictionary containing at least 5 real scientific terms and 5 terms that you have created yourself. The goal is to create words that will trick your classmates into thinking they are real. Upon completion of the activity, your dictionary will be shared with your classmates so they can try to pick out the real and made-up words. The students who create the most believable words will receive 2 bonus points on their assignment. In order to create believable words, you will have to provide definitions, pronunciations, and etymologies based on those of real scientific roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
Your first goal will be to find a reliable list of scientific roots, prefixes, and suffixes. You will then use these to create words that contain at least 3 syllables. Your dictionary should be set up just like a page in a real dictionary, with the word, pronunciation, part of speech, etymology, definition, and sample sentence. Your dictionary should be alphabetized and contain at least 5 real scientific words and 5 words created by you.
The following document contains an example of a dictionary using made-up words created from scientific roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Your final dictionary should look similar to this but you cannot use any of these words. Also, be aware that this sample contains 10 made-up words and no real words whereas you are required to create 5 words and use 5 real words from the dictionary.
